Around town
Everything this module explains, on one page.
Andare — to go
Say where you are going.
- Andare is irregular: vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno. Vado a casa — I am going home; andiamo! — let's go!
- Some places take in without an article: in banca, in farmacia, in centro, in ufficio. Cities take a: vado a Firenze.
- A merges with the article: a + il = al, a + la = alla. Vado al cinema, vado alla stazione.
The mistake you are about to make
Vado a il cinema.
Vado al cinema.
To the stays two words in English. Italian fuses a and il: al.
Asking the way
Ask for directions and understand the answer.
- Start with scusi, then ask dov'è: Scusi, dov'è il museo? For something that may or may not be nearby: c'è una farmacia qui vicino?
- The answer uses a few words: a destra — right, a sinistra — left, sempre dritto — straight on, poi — then, all'angolo — at the corner.
- Dov'è is dove + è shortened. For several things use dove sono: dove sono i bagni? — where are the toilets?
The mistake you are about to make
Dov'è i bagni?
Dove sono i bagni?
Dov'è feels like a fixed where. It contains è, is; plural things need dove sono.
Places in town
Name places and say what is near or far.
- Places: la stazione, l'albergo — hotel, la farmacia, la banca, il supermercato, il museo, la chiesa — church, la piazza — square.
- Vicino a means near and lontano da means far from: la banca è vicino alla stazione. Da merges with the article too: lontano dal centro.
- To ask whether it is far: è lontano? The answer is often in minutes: sono cinque minuti a piedi — it is five minutes on foot.
The mistake you are about to make
near of the station
vicino alla stazione
Near has no preposition in English, so learners guess di. Italian says vicino a, fused: alla stazione.
