Where I went
Everything this module explains, on one page.
Passé composé with être
Talk about movement in the past with être.
- About twenty verbs take être instead of avoir. Most describe moving from one place to another: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre.
- So je suis allé au cinéma — I went to the cinema, and elle est arrivée à midi — she arrived at noon. The helper is être in the present: suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont.
- Add naître, mourir, rester and tomber, and every reflexive verb. Imagine a house: you arrive, enter, go up, come down, leave — all with être.
The mistake you are about to make
J'ai allé à Paris.
Je suis allé à Paris.
English uses have for every verb, so avoir feels universal. Movement verbs like aller take être.
Agreement with être
Make the participle agree when the helper is être.
- With être the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective. A woman writes je suis allée, with -e. It sounds the same as allé.
- Plural adds -s: ils sont partis, elles sont parties. A mixed group takes the masculine plural: Marc et Julie sont arrivés.
- With avoir there is no such agreement: elle a mangé, ils ont regardé. Only être makes the participle change.
The mistake you are about to make
Elle est allé.
Elle est allée.
English participles never change, so allé looks finished. With être it agrees: elle est allée.
Telling a story
Link past events into a short story.
- Sequence words make a story easy to follow: d'abord — first, ensuite or puis — then, après — after that, enfin — finally.
- Mix both helpers as the verbs need: d'abord je suis allé au marché, ensuite j'ai acheté du pain, enfin je suis rentré. Check each verb separately.
- Après can also take a noun: après le dîner, nous sommes sortis — after dinner we went out. Sortir takes être because it means going out.
The mistake you are about to make
Ensuite je suis acheté du pain.
Ensuite j'ai acheté du pain.
The story began with être, and the helper repeats by habit. Acheter is not movement, so it takes avoir.
