Building an argument

Because, since, given that
Give a reason at the right register.
- porque never opens a sentence; como does. No fui porque llovía. Como llovía, no fui. The same reason, two positions.
- ya que and puesto que give a reason both sides already know: Ya que estás aquí, ayúdame.
- debido a takes a noun and belongs to writing: Debido al mal tiempo. With a clause it needs debido a que.

Como llovía, no fui.
"Because it was raining" can open an English sentence. Porque cannot; at the start Spanish uses como.
So, therefore, as a result
Draw a consequence.
- así que is the everyday so: Estaba cansado, así que me fui. It goes between the two halves.
- por lo tanto and por consiguiente belong to writing. They take a comma on both sides.
- tan and tanto build the so that pattern: Era tan tarde que me fui. Había tanta gente que no entramos.

Tanto and tan both mean so, and the first to hand gets used. Before an adjective it is tan.
On the other hand
Set two ideas against each other.
- en cambio and mientras que compare two things directly: Yo prefiero el mar; ella, en cambio, la montaña.
- no obstante and sin embargo concede and then turn: Es caro; no obstante, lo compraré.
- por un lado and por otro lay out two sides in order. An essay is often built on exactly this pair.

Yo prefiero el mar; ella, en cambio, la montaña.
The contrast gets marked twice for emphasis. One connector is enough: mientras que or en cambio.
Opening and closing
Frame a piece of writing.
- Openings: En primer lugar, Para empezar, Hoy en día, En los últimos años. The last two set a context rather than a list.
- Adding: además, asimismo, cabe añadir. Giving an example: por ejemplo, en concreto, como es el caso de.
- Closing: en conclusión, en definitiva, a modo de resumen. All three take a comma and open the last paragraph.

"Firstly" is one word, so en gets dropped. The phrase is en primer lugar.
