Travelling and dealing with it
Everything this module explains, on one page.
Getting there
Buy tickets and understand the announcements.
- Transport takes en: en tren, en avión, en coche. Only a pie and a caballo break the rule.
- A return ticket is ida y vuelta; one way is solo ida. Both go after billete or boleto.
- The announcements use el andén, la vía, la puerta de embarque, el retraso, hacer transbordo.
The mistake you are about to make
un billete ida y vuelta
un billete de ida y vuelta
"A return ticket" has no preposition. Spanish needs de: un billete de ida y vuelta.
Where you sleep
Book a room and describe a problem with it.
- To book: Quería reservar una habitación doble para tres noches. quería is politer than quiero.
- una habitación individual or doble, con vistas, el desayuno incluido, la fianza, la llave.
- A complaint opens with an apology: Perdone, es que el aire acondicionado no funciona. es que introduces the reason gently.
The mistake you are about to make
una habitación por tres noches
una habitación para tres noches
"For three nights" has for, and por looks like for. The length of a booking takes para.
When it goes wrong
Report a loss or an accident.
- Spanish has a way of saying it happened rather than I did it: Se me perdió el pasaporte. Se me rompió el móvil.
- The verb agrees with the thing, not with you: Se me perdieron las llaves. Plural keys, plural verb.
- To report it: poner una denuncia, la comisaría, los objetos perdidos, el seguro.
The mistake you are about to make
Se me perdió las llaves.
Se me perdieron las llaves.
The verb agrees with the thing that got lost, not with you. Keys are plural: se me perdieron.
Telling the story
Narrate a trip from start to end.
- Order the story with primero, luego, después, al final. They open a sentence and need no preposition.
- The scene goes in the imperfect and the events in the preterite: Hacía calor y decidimos ir a la playa.
- A listener reacts: ¿En serio? ¡Qué bien! ¡Vaya! ¿Y luego? These keep the story going.
The mistake you are about to make
Hizo calor y decidimos ir a la playa.
Hacía calor y decidimos ir a la playa.
English marks neither, so both verbs go into the preterite. The weather is background and takes the imperfect.
