In the shop
Buy something and pay for it.
- Quantities take de: un kilo de tomates, una botella de agua, dos barras de pan.
- The shop runs on four phrases: ¿Qué le pongo? Póngame un kilo. ¿Algo más? Nada más, gracias.
- At the till: ¿Cuánto es? and either En efectivo or Con tarjeta. The change is el cambio and the receipt el recibo.

"A kilo of tomatoes" has an of, and it gets dropped anyway. Spanish always keeps de: un kilo de tomates.
At the doctor
Say what hurts.
- doler works like gustar: Me duele la cabeza. Me duelen los pies. The verb agrees with the part, not with you.
- Most symptoms take tener: tengo fiebre, tengo tos, tengo frío. Estar enfermo is the general state.
- la cabeza, la garganta, el estómago, la espalda, la pierna, el brazo. And encontrarse for how you feel: No me encuentro bien.

Mi cabeza duele.
Me duele la cabeza.
"My head hurts" makes the head yours with my. Spanish says it hurts to me, and the body part takes the article.
On the phone
Make and take a call.
- Spain answers ¿Diga? or ¿Dígame? Much of Latin America says ¿Aló? or ¿Bueno? Any of them is safe.
- To ask for somebody: ¿Está Ana? or ¿Puedo hablar con Ana? The answer might be Soy yo or No está.
- A message: ¿Puede decirle que he llamado? And to hang up politely: Un momento, no cuelgue.

"Speak to Ana" brings a with it. In Spanish you talk with somebody: hablar con Ana.
Finding the way
Ask for and follow directions.
- Open with Perdone and then ¿Sabe dónde está la estación? or ¿Hay un banco por aquí?
- The answer runs on a handful of verbs: siga todo recto, gire a la derecha, cruce la plaza, tome la segunda calle.
- Distance: está a cinco minutos, está muy cerca, está bastante lejos. And al lado de, enfrente de, detrás de for landmarks.

Gire a la derecha.
"Turn right" has no article. Spanish needs one: a la derecha, a la izquierda.
