More, less, the best
Everything this module explains, on one page.
Más que, menos que
Compare two things.
- Comparison is two words around the adjective: más caro que, menos caro que. Nothing is added to the adjective itself.
- Before a number it is de, not que: Cuesta más de veinte euros. Using que there is the commonest slip.
- The adjective still agrees with what it describes: Estas casas son más caras. Comparison does not freeze it.
The mistake you are about to make
más que veinte euros
más de veinte euros
"More than twenty" uses than, so que comes out. Before a number Spanish uses de: más de veinte.
Just as much
Say two things are equal.
- For an equal comparison with an adjective: tan alto como. The pair wraps the adjective the same way más que does.
- Before a noun it becomes tanto: Tengo tanto dinero como tú. The o is not optional there.
- tanto then agrees with that noun: tanta paciencia, tantos libros, tantas ideas.

tan dinero como tú
tanto dinero como tú
Tan … como was learned first and looks universal. Before a noun it is tanto, and it agrees: tanta paciencia.
El mejor de todos
Say something is the most.
- The superlative is the article plus más: el más caro, la más rápida, los más jóvenes.
- The group takes de, where English uses in: el mejor restaurante de la ciudad.
- -ísimo says very without comparing anything: carísimo, buenísimo, facilísimo. It replaces the final vowel.
The mistake you are about to make
el mejor restaurante en la ciudad
el mejor restaurante de la ciudad
"The best in the city" puts in first. After a superlative Spanish introduces the group with de.
Saying which you prefer
Give an opinion and back it up.
- preferir takes a for the thing rejected: Prefiero el té al café. The al is a contraction of a plus el.
- me parece gives an impression: Me parece caro. Me parece que es caro adds a whole clause after it.
- porque gives the reason and por eso gives the result. No sé porque means something else entirely — porque there needs to be por qué.
The mistake you are about to make
No sé porque.
No sé por qué.
Porque and por qué sound identical. Joined it is "because"; apart with an accent it is "why", which is what no sé wants.
