Would, could, if only

würde
Say what you would do, for any verb at all.
- würde is werden with an umlaut and a different job: ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden. It builds the would form of any verb.
- The pattern is würde plus the infinitive at the end: Ich würde gern kommen. One rule covers every verb in the language.
- It is also the polite register. Würden Sie mir bitte helfen? is what you say to a stranger; Helfen Sie mir is an order.
The mistake you are about to make
Ich würde gern zu kommen.
Ich würde gern kommen.
"Would like to come" carries a to, and zu follows it in. After würde the infinitive is bare: ich würde gern kommen.
hätte and wäre
Use the short forms that never take würde.
- haben and sein have their own would forms and never use würde: ich hätte, ich wäre. Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee is how you order.
- The modals do the same: könnte, müsste, dürfte, sollte, wollte. Könnten Sie mir helfen is one step politer than Können Sie.
- So the short list of B1 politeness is small: hätte, wäre, könnte, and würde for everything else. Four words carry the whole register.

Ich würde froh sein.
Ich wäre froh.
The würde rule is tidy enough that it gets applied to sein and haben as well. Those two keep their own forms: wäre and hätte, never würde sein.
If things were different
Build a full unreal sentence with two halves.
- An unreal sentence has two halves and both are in the would form: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen.
- In the wenn half, prefer the short form where one exists: hätte, wäre, könnte. Two würde in one sentence sounds clumsy even to Germans.
- A wish takes nur and no second half at all: Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte! The exclamation mark does the rest of the work.

"If I had time" keeps the verb early, so hätte lands right after ich. Wenn is a subordinator: its verb goes to the end of that half.
Giving advice
Suggest what somebody should do without telling them off.
- solltest is the advice word: Du solltest mehr schlafen. It is softer than musst and stronger than könntest, which is exactly the range advice lives in.
- Es wäre besser, wenn … is the careful version, and Ich an deiner Stelle … is the friendly one. Both avoid the bare imperative, which in German lands hard.

English advice runs on "ought to" and "need to", and that to brings zu along with it. After a modal there is none: du solltest mehr schlafen.
